The Fitzpatrick Hotel — Past and Present

The Fitzpatrick Hotel is anything but just another place to stay in Washington. A hotel rich in history, The Fitzpatrick allows guests the chance to enjoy luxurious accommodations reminiscent of a previous era. Keep reading as we dive into the past and present of this iconic hotel.

A history of The Fitzpatrick Hotel

It’s impossible to discuss the history of The Fitzpatrick Hotel without mentioning the fire that broke out on June 11, 1895 in Washington-Wilkes. Nearly 125 years later, the fire remains the worst in the city’s history. John and Thomas Fitzpatrick, who were running a mercantile business in Lancaster at the time, decided to return home to Washington and begin constructing a hotel where the buildings occupying the land were destroyed.

Fast-forward four years and The Fitzpatrick Hotel was in business. John and Thomas not only made The Fitzpatrick an incredible place to stay, but the brothers also used the ground floor of the hotel as space for the sale of groceries, dry goods, and men’s furnishings. It’s no surprise The Fitzpatrick Hotel became the county’s most profitable firm in its first year of business.

Matters became complicated with the hotel when John died in 1907 and Thomas died in 1911. After Thomas’ sisters filed a lawsuit, the hotel was sold to Mrs. Alice Hynes and her daughters in 1914. The Hynes family renamed it the Columbus Inn and operated it until 1922 when it was sold to W.T. Johnson and Company. The rivals of the Fitzpatrick brothers changed the name to the Washington Hotel, which it stayed until 1951.

From 1951-2004, the building remained empty. That’s when developers Jim Carter and Mike Todd attempted to save the 17-room Victorian hotel and turn it into a tourist destination. The duo had visions of restoring the guest rooms, and adding a restaurant, courtyard, conference room, and commercial spaces on the street level.

The Fitzpatrick Hotel in 2019

A lot has changed with The Fitzpatrick since its inaugural opening in 1898. For one thing, every room has a private bathroom. Additionally, some rooms have fireplaces, with complimentary breakfast provided by The Square Cafe. The Fitzpatrick has everything you expect from a modern hotel in Washington.

However, The Fitzpatrick maintains its historical allure. From the elegant stained glass windows to the Victorian period furniture, guests can’t help but picture themselves in a previous era!
